Obituary

Sharon Lee Hughey, born on December 6, 1948, in Portageville, Missouri, to the late Elsie Mae Slider and S.L. Hughey, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 27, 2024, in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, at the age of 75.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Michael and Joseph Hughey. On September 2, 1967, he married Maxine Chastain, beginning a devoted partnership that spanned 57 years. Sharon honorably served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, stationed near the Demilitarized Zone in South Korea.

After his military service, Sharon embarked on a 30-year career with Southwestern Bell, where he was an active member of the Communications Workers of America (CWA) and served as a union representative.

A dedicated father, Sharon coached his daughters' softball teams and faithfully attended every volleyball game, cheerleading event, and band performance. Sharon and his family were longtime members of St. Teresa's Catholic Church in Kennett, Missouri, where he was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed barbecuing to support fraternity events, generously contributing his time and skills. These connections remained a cherished part of his life until he and Maxine moved to Cape Girardeau in 2020.

Known for his sharp wit and teasing nature, Sharon was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. In retirement, he devoted himself to helping his daughters with home and work projects and enjoyed babysitting his three granddaughters, nurturing close bonds with each of them. He continued to be present in their lives as they grew, attending as many school events as possible, cheering them on with pride. He was also an enthusiastic NASCAR fan, often organizing his activities around the next race.

He leaves behind his cherished wife, Maxine Hughey; two daughters, Yvonne Hughey Randolph and Rhonda Hughey; and three beloved granddaughters, Reagan Randolph, Reese Randolph, and McKinzley Williams, all of Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

A celebration of Sharon's life, with full military honors, was held on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at 1 p.m. at John W. German Funeral Home in Hayti, Missouri, with interment following at Woodlawn Cemetery in Hayti.
